"Shadows Over the Cape Fear" Elizabeth Sheats Original

The original, "Shadows Over the Cape Fear" by Elizabeth Sheats, is inspired by the historic landscape surrounding Fort Fisher and the Cape Fear River, a site deeply connected to Wilmington's Civil War history. I was drawn to the contrast between the peaceful beauty of the maritime forest and the intense history tied to the land and waterway. Through watercolor and layered color blocking, I focused on light, movement, and atmosphere rather than literal historical imagery, allowing the landscape itself to tell the story. The shifting shadows, winding trees, and glimpses of the river invite viewers to reflect on both the natural beauty and historical significance of this place.
